This decision, will also extend my college career to at least another year. OU doesn't offer a wide variety of online classes, so I will be forced to attend class in the evenings, taking valuable time away from my family. Since I also work full time, I will probably only be able to take 6 hours a semester and this is where my time in college will be extended. But hey, at least the cost is significantly cheaper..for example 15 hours at MSSU will now cost me $5040.00 not including books. 15 hours at OU will only cost me $2892.00. That is a savings of $2418.00 per semester assuming 15 hour enrollment. OU is only $241.00 a credit hour, but since I am an employee I get 6 hours half price, and now, it makes sense to go to OU. Even without the employee discount that is only $3615.00, still a savings of $1425.00..
MSSU will be missed. I was a Lionbacker for years when I lived in Joplin, met my wife at MSSU where she is now part of the Alumni, graduating in 2008. It is rather sad an unfortunate that us, the 100% distance students, are being unfairly sought after to fill the economic holes due to declining state revenues. I think that MSSU should of evaluated the cost as a whole and passed the increase to all students instead of a select group..How can they justify a 43% percent increase in the distance learning fee, $35 to $50 and a 100% increase per credit hour when the cost of taking an course is the same no matter where you choose to connect?
I'm right there with you. I take all my classes online because I work Monday-Friday, 9 to 5. I think the increase for distance students is a bit ridiculous. I am definitely exploring other options.
ReplyDeleteOh, NO! Who will I pick on from now on? To whom will I gripe to about Dr. Evil? Suddenly I have a line from Pink’s song coming on, “Pleeeeeeeeeeease, don’t leave me! Tam tada ta da ta dam” ;-)
ReplyDeleteI also think that is a ridiculous increase! Now instead of generating revenue they will end up losing it with a lot of people looking for someplace cheaper to go to. Although I am taking my classes from Africa, I own a house in Buffalo and have been a Missouri resident for the most of my American life. For that reason I am able to go to MSSU as a Missouri resident so I will still be able to continue my education.
I’m sorry, Joseph! It will be hard, but you will make it! And your family will understand!
I'm sorry to hear you have to leave. But unfortunately, I bet you are not the only student forced to leave MSSU. It's sad that they are pushing their students away like that. Did you know for all the on campus students they charge $150/semester for the gym they have on campus? I bet 75% of the students didn't know that. They put it in your total bill without actually telling anyone what it means. And this applies to students who only have 1 class on campus. Seems like Southern is taking their students for everything they have, and the credit cost going up is rediculus. Good luck in your new school though, I hope you like it better.
ReplyDeleteMan that is unfortunate. Why would they make such an increase so quickly I wonder. I mean usually such increases are gradual and people don't like but will pay the price because it is not all that bad. But not MSSU they go ahead and double the tuition for online out-of-state students. Kind of unwise, I don't know everything behind this descision, but still. Good luck at OU, and I hope you will be able to squeeze every ounce of joy out of the time you will be able to spend with your family.
